  • Powerful, obscure law is basis for Trump 'order' on trade

    From apnews.com

President Donald Trump is threatening to use the emergency authority granted by a powerful but obscure federal law to make good on his tweeted “order” to U.S. businesses to cut ties in China amid a spiraling trade war between the two nations. China’s announcement Friday that it was raising tariffs on $75 billion in U.S. imports sent Trump into a rage and White House aides scrambling for a response. Trump fired off on Twitter, declaring American companies “are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for an alternative to China.” He later clarified that he was threatening to make use of the International ... Protectionism is a losing script for USA. Endgame now ticking. Still bullish on USD on cyclical grounds.

Yes you are correct a country that uses protectionism is a losing script. A country that employs industrial espionage. currency manipulation, forced partnerships, forced transfer of Trade secrets, State support of industry, little environmental control, State control of largest Banks is quite protectionist. The country you named is not the one doing these things .

Internationalists who place money above country have now been warned that the Temperature is rising and choose carefully how to play in the Ocean of World commerce. This is going to impact trade flows and there are many stable countries who are going to benefit simply by adhering to international norms.

It's not what Trump is doing . It's the way he goes about it . Statesman he is not , sometimes i even question his business acumen .

Diplomacy and pragmatism is required not ranting and certainly not via Twitter

Next move: Align with Boris in order to circumvent economic embargo. Just a guess. Not sure Boris is workable as his statements conclude otherwise.

At any rate, should make for some good FX moves.

Republicans claim to support free markets and minimal government, yet they voted in a president that is ordering companies to do what he tells them to do...

While China suffers from the departure of high margin production, the U.S.
will still enjoy low-cost imports from other Asian countries. In a world of surplus
goods and services, the buyer has the upper hand. Therefore, the U.S. should win
the trade war with China. But the long-term gain that follows the short-term pain
may be limited by China’s determined challenge for world domination.

If people think there is no real world effect and it is all just noise, just replaced four sneakers on my Truck. Made in Thailand. Used to love those Dunlops wore like Iron, but had left it to my Tire guy only having stipulated 10 Ply rating. Never anticipated Thailand as a source.
Last year bought a splitting mall, made in Vietnam, fantastic, hard to argue for $35.00 including fiberglass handle epoxied into head.
The move out of China has been happening for a few years now. Markets just have not been following real world. Too busy listening to economists and mass media.
The point is China has no monopoly on where things are going to get made whether moving out of West or sourcing from Asia.

add: If I can pick up on this shift, bet that Trumps advisers have as well, so Tariff applications are not going to produce the dire sourcing problems shouting out in the Press.

add:#2 Might this be an factor for the Two year delay in making the currency manipulation declaration. Provided a window for supply lines to get shifted for those who were listening. Just done quietly.
Will be finding out this year where truth is.

USA has done all of the above and ignores the momentum behind international attempts to reach a consensus to deal with them. You can't handle the truth.
