Monet painting ‘Meules’ sells for more than $110M at auction

A Claude Monet painting sold for $110.7 million at Sotheby’s auction house in Manhattan on Tuesday — the first time any impressionist painting has fetched more than $100 million at auction.

Monet’s celebrated “Meules,” which was sold in Manhattan, last hit the auction block in 1986. Another Monet piece from same “Haystack” series was sold in 2016 at Christie’s for $81.4 million.

Tuesday’s sale is one of the 10 highest prices ever seen at auction. The buyer was not identified.

Monet painted the Meules series over the course of a year in the late 19th Century while at his home in France’s Normandy region.

The anonymous art collector who bought the piece in 1986 paid just $2.5 million for the work.

Tuesday’s sale comes less than two years after a Leonardo Da Vinci painting fetched the highest ever price at auction.

The painting, Salvator Mundi, was bought by a Saudi Prince in November 2017.
