At least there will likely be an extension from 29th March, so there is a glimmer of hope that the 8 week could spring something different.

This is just hope, reality may be different and difficult taking into consideration that June 2016 is over 33months ago, so what can change in 2 months?

A longer extension would catalyze more "Stay in EU" sentiment and the authorities would have more time to organize a new referendum.

You were missing the news. EU wants to give UK a longer extension, the issue is with this short one, because of EU parliament elections on may 23. UK will need to take a part in those, if its still in EU by may 23, but then it wouldn't make sense if they got out 1 month later. So EU wants to extend either until may 23 or then at least until the end of the year, or even better 2 years.

I thought EU said long or short extension must be justified. EU said May has not justified the request for extension

That would be perfectly fine- WE (The UK) shall thrive , when we are masters of our own destiny, to do our own bespoke trade deals with the rest of the world and not paying into the European coffers.
The only thing still interesting about the GBP Brexit debacle is when traders will figure out the market no longer cares about any Brexit related news. It's all just up and down, humdrum price action.

Would be just wonderful if they did, but unfortunately, the EU Nomenklatura are rather desperate to get their grubby little hands on our 39 billion pounds, without which the EU faces an even bigger financial black hole than exists already.

Please please Juncker & Co, we demand to be kicked out, and you can keep Mrs May whilst you're at it, as her lying and treachery make her ideally suited to a job inside the EU Commission.

The markets seem relatively sanguine about sterling's prospects. Let's not forget that prior to sterling's rally in 2019, the chances of a no-deal scenario might have seemed low, but sterling remained subdued because a no-deal scenario hadn't been taken off the table. As 2019 has progressed, the chances of a no-deal scenario appeared to diminish and markets responded accordingly. Sterling reached recent highs on the assumption that a no-deal scenario was now off the table.

Arguably, a no-deal scenario is now as probable as it has ever been, with the aggravating factor of time pressure. Given that sterling has only sunk to levels at which a no-deal scenario was more or less off the table, one can only assume that the markets are confidently writing this off as nothing more than brinkmanship.
If the EU is desperate to NOT have a hard border between Eire and NI, how does "kicking the UK out" of the EU resolve that? What would Eire think of being 'thrown to the lions' by Brussels? The conclusion must be that the EU would blink from 'imposing a No-Deal Brexit'.

If it's a question of blinking, don't forget that Parliament has already voted resolutely against any no-deal Brexit. It's a game of chicken, for sure, but with one party driving a Fiat Uno and the other driving a juggernaut. To relate this to currency movements, all I'm saying is I wouldn't bet on the EU blinking first.

The "no deal Brexit" is not being imposed. It is the default "do nothing" outcome from triggering Article 50. Any other outcome requires active work. If this work is not carried out at all (for whatever reason), does not get carried out on time (for whatever reason), or the work carried out ends in no agreement (for whatever reason), then no deal on March 29.

People discount this scenario disproportionately trusting in "common sense" and "reason" forgetting that Brexit is primarily an emotional affair aggravated by main UK parties' political games. The real "canary in the coal mine" is the slim 4 vote majority that "no deal off" was voted for last week, in a non-binding vote at that. There are way too many in UK parliament that appear fine with no deal. It is definitely not off the table.

I would say EU want to avoid no deal but far from "at all costs". I am sure everyone in Brussels is weighing the immediate economic costs of no deal vs the longer term damage by giving the poisonous Brexiteer snake intimate access to EU institutions through UK participating in the EU parliament elections.

My opinion as a EU citizen is I expect EU27 stay united and firm, make no major concessions while trying everything possible to both avoid creating of further bad blood and exposing EU to Brexiteer contamination risk, and after no deal on march 29, starting work on a new normal for the relations between EU and the freshly acquired foreign country status UK. The UK should be given the chance it wanted to find out whether "project fear" was really that, or accurate prognosis of the reality. And so should the other 27.
