  • Powell: Monetary Policy in a Changing Economy

    From federalreserve.gov

Thank you for the opportunity to speak here today. Fifteen years ago, during the period now referred to as the Great Moderation, the topic of this symposium was "Adapting to a Changing Economy." In opening the proceedings, then-Chairman Alan Greenspan famously declared that "uncertainty is not just an important feature of the monetary policy landscape; it is the defining characteristic of that landscape."1 On the doorstep of the period now referred to as the Global Financial Crisis, surely few, if any, at that symposium would have imagined how shockingly different the next 15 years would be from the 15 years that ... • Powell sees 'further, gradual' rate hikes ahead as economy continues to hum

    From cnbc.com

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said Friday he expects a slow but steady diet of interest rate increases to continue as the central bank looks to find the right recipe between promoting growth and controlling excesses. In his closely watched speech at the Fed's annual Jackson Hole, Wyoming retreat, Powell expressed confidence in the economy and said he does not see inflation getting out of hand. As a result, the current trajectory the Fed has been following since December 2015 is likely to change so long as there aren't any significant changes to economic trends. The FED prints the dollar then lends it to US government (Treasury), at some point (maturity of the loan) the money will have to return to the FED + interests. So is the FED getting richer?

The bullish nature of USD has been dominant due to aggressive rate hikes and growing economy, why other major economies are flattering to deceive. In the short run usd still remains bullish but I see a fight back from Pound once the brexit air clears.

If the Treasury pay back the FED $10 trillion worth of US treasury securities (as of august its 2.36 trillion) then the FED would reduce its balance sheet's assets and liabilities by $10 trillion each. Interest earned is part of the central banks income.
I suppose a simple answer would be no the FED isn't getting $10 trillion richer?

The Fed prints the dollars then buys the bonds off the market to increase their balance sheet and increase the cash in the economy to try boost inflation, normally when your not quantitative easing the fed facilitates the market purchasing of US government debt through posting bond sales, they dont print money always. Under QE the fed bought bonds with printed money and to reduce their balance sheet they will letr those bonds mature and yes the treasury will make money off the interest rate but destroy the money hat gets paid back to reverse QE and make the money supply smaller. But the fed after accounting for expenses actually pays the government their revenues, the fed has a profit and loss statement and balance sheet statement which you can read. They pay alot for staff costs they must be all millionaires working at the fed.
