Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters that it appeared that a ballistic missile was fired and that it flew over the country. South Korea's Yonhap, citing the military, said that Pyongyang fired a ballistic missile which flew through Japan's airspace. A threatened attack against Japan causes traders to Buy the Japanese Yen?

The Flight to safety is rather counter intuitive, said a Bloomberg News reporter just now.

I think one of the reason is investors borrowed the Yen (low-interest rate) and invest that money in higher yielding assets (risk-on environment) in other countries. However, when global uncertainty happens, it causes investors to unwind these trades, which then results in demand for the yen. There could be other reasons as well.

sigh... this was the 5th time missile passed above japan.

some notes:
Missile was above 550km high which is actually outer-space and outside of japan's airspace. No defense system can intercept the missile in the space.
japanese government knew the missile will pass above japan and will not hit japan. There is no need to intercept n.korea missile.
One counter missile costs about 3 million. This is not the game as some folks think.
If intercept, debris would fall to japan.

Now, some pessimism:
Maybe japan cannot intercept the missile. The problem is not to fail to intercept, but to reveal japan is not capable to intercept.
Even though the success rate is ALMOST 100%(as government claim), it is not 100%. Is it realistic to intercept something that speed is 5km per second? I dont know.
N.korea own more than 1000 missiles. japan can intercept only 30 or less at once.

sigh...

That is a note-worthy point. I wonder what the US would do if NK put something into orbit.

How high is the end of 'air space'? I can see people in the US might say something like up to the Geostationary distance.

Because THAAD, SCUD and AEGIS are not really as advertised. In the real world, failures to shoot down those missiles the military industrial complex will lose billions if not trillions.

afaik, only 100km high. japan considers missile within 100km high is the violation of japan's airspace, and will try to intercept.
But there is no international law to define the altitude of airspace. Above 100km high, it is considered as the space and countries cooperate for the space development.
btw, international space station(ISS) is about 400km high. N.korea missile can fly above that and can hit almost everywhere on earth. This is not a problem for only usa and japan, sigh...
What is annoying is that, the technology to launch satellite is very similar to launch missile. No one can stop launching satellite. Therefore n.korea claim it was a satellite and so n.korea is unstoppable, developing nuclear bomb simultaneously. sigh...

The last NK test went to an altitude of ~1600km. When I can be arsed I will calculate whether that is enough to achieve orbit. Punching something up to an altitude that then falls back to earth is not the same as achieving >20,000kph which is the low earth orbit speed (give or take 1000kph).
