  • Dollar Flash Crashes On Last Trading Day Of 2016

    From zerohedge.com

It is oddly appropriate that in a year everyone finally admitted markets are manipulated by central banks and broken by HFT algos, that on the last trading day of 2016, the dollar flash crashed with for no reason whatsoever. Shortly after 6:30pm Eastern, the dollar plunged by 150 pips against the Euro, once 1.05 stops were taken out, with algos sending the EURUSD as high as 1.07 in a matter of seconds...... while concurrently the Swiss Franc soared as much as 1.6% against the greenback, as the USDCHF tumbled from just over 1.025 to just above 1.0050 as the pair briefly flirted with parity.

I would say that EUR had flash crash , not dollar. There are no spikes on NZDUSD, USDCAD, but are all on EUR and CHF.

I was not asking for advice, dear friend

My point is that it's a USD crash since it went down.

"that on the last trading day of 2016", really? As far as I know today is the last trading day of 2016, even if a bit short in some countries.

Guys, it is the end of the year. Some positions have to be closed-out by commercial houses who need the security of a solid balance sheet (i.e. cash) and no worry that some nutter like <insert favourite despot> is going to start a war on New Year's Eve.

agree that a lot of traders want to be in cash over the long weekend, but isn't USD the safest "cash" to be in? if anything untoward happens over the weekend, this might, repeat might, be the catalyst:

"I would say that EUR had FLASH CRASH , not dollar."

"What HAPPENED to the EURUSD pair, up or down? [meaning, in the past]

1/ You'll need a better comprehension of the english language. It's not your mothertongue, but it is neither mine. In doubt, you'd better keep your mouth shut. On top of that, you are insulting me!

2/ Learn the difference between a flash crash and a crash, then come back.

Maybe, but if you are in a non-US country (the Far East for instance) you want your positions closed into your native currency, which might be Baht, Ringgit or even Aus$.

Could be a reason, but we did not see a significant surge in any asian currency, as opposed to the EUR/CHF.

And I don't think some institution would built a huge long position/ unwind a huge short EURUSD, at a time when there is no liquidity.

I am confident that the reaso is a fat finger mistake or some crazy algos...

I think its not a crash of anything. It is very simple if you think about it. After the FED rate hike retail customers loaded up on USD longs and the dollar trades went up. Before the end of the year big boys wanted to take profit from those longs so they started selling and vallah!!

sort of reminiscent of GBPUSD crash under 1.20 a few months back. quietly, in the middle of the night light a fuse near a tank of kerosene and run away. then come back a few minutes later after a big noise, and see what happened.

The market was basically dead, like a weekend. The volume of the first spike was only 187. Could have been someone doing an end-of-year take profit, or someone showing off at a drunk party, lol. Who knows? Doesn't affect day traders as we don't trade EURUSD at that hour, though the technical showed it well in advance. Happy New Year!
