  • 'Enough is enough': Hillary Clinton tells Bernie Sanders to stop smearing her over Wall Street money

    From businessinsider.com

During the Thursday-night Democratic presidential debate, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton confronted her chief primary rival over his constant criticism of her ties to Wall Street. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) has repeatedly questioned why big banks and financial interests have given her campaign money and paid her hundreds of thousands of dollars in speaking fees. Clinton directly told Sanders that it was time to end his "smear" by insinuation. "Time and time again, by innuendo, by insinuation, there is attack that he is putting forth," she said. She went on to say that it was beneath Sanders' ... (full story)

Bernie is a very likable and personable american politician. Probably a rare sort out there but only the unrealistic would expect that he stands a chance of implementing his brand of socialism in america. He would simply divide the country to a standstill at best Reminds me of Jimmy Carter really and a pity in the end they will not take him or his ideas on, and even if by some wild chance they did he would fail as in fall to insurmountable opposition from day one.
If people will therefore put aside their petty envy (of successful people and families) Hilary is actually the only hope the democrats have. She is not that different if at all from Bernie in terms of aspirations just more practical and experienced - far more. It is hypocritical to suggest there is anything wrong with her taking speaking fees in a country where people are doing whatever they can to get to that point. It is not as if her accusers are the set of persons invited to speak for similar fees in similar circumstances as her by Wall street and turned it down. Neither is there evidence that she is inclined to pander to or be influenced by Wall street as a result. She never actually solicited for their attention. It is amazing that people insist on angels from heaven running for political office in the face of the fact that only humans on earth are available for the job. Very unkind and hypocritical.

I don't think anyone expects angels, as you say, but people in the U.S. are showing that they are tired of the political establishment. That is the reason why candidates like Trump and Sanders have been doing so surprisingly well during this election cycle. And most people understand that Sanders has little chance of accomplishing the things he is proposing. It's just refreshing for some to hear a serious presidential candidate say the things that he is saying.

The Democrats might also want to think twice if they believe Hillary is their only shot at beating whoever the Republicans nominate. There are a lot of liberals and leftists, mainly young voters, that would just jump ship if the Dems run Hillary out there, and the election might be a lot closer than some people think. Republicans aren't the only ones with a hatred or at least a dislike of Hillary and Bill Clinton. And the reasons have little if anything at all to do with petty envy.

Actually, the worst he can do is raise awareness in this country as to the hypocrisy in the White House which has done worse than bring the country to a stand still, it has moved it backwards.

The young people of today are far more sophisticated politically and take offense to your characterization of every Bernie supporters as nothing more than shallow idiots envious of successful people. Whether young or old, the communication age has made your brand of politicized generalizations and attacks largely ineffective.

Since when does 8 years elected service count as more experienced than 34 years? This is getting ridiculous. Not to mention Bernies track record for successfully reaching across the isle and getting things done.

Your wrong. It's exactly as if her "accusers" (enter Bernie Sanders) ARE "the set of persons" invited to speak for similar fees etc. etc.

Bernie has turned down MILLIONS in his 34 years in office by making himself the enemy of our politicians corporatist culture.

With over 40,000 lobbyist in DC, no politician has to solicit their attention. It is only the rare individual like Sanders that denies them.

It's a sad commentary on your state of mind and even more sad when you try to convince the country that it's "unkind and hypocritical" for us to expect our politicians to represent the peoples interest over special interests.

Go away, nameless corporate shill.

My post stands unedited and I dare say still to be contradicted by any of your counter points (which points are very reasonable in the wider context of long run american politics but less so in the narrow context of who would be a viable choice between Bernie and Hilary in the upcoming general elections). But let me clarify that I do not address young voters in the quote above as you allude - in fact I have the typical anti Hilary poster (in this thread) in mind in most of what I have had to say. I assume these are not the same as young voters nor are they representative of their views or psyche. As I understand it, Hilary has evolved with time and age and there was once a time when in terms of democratic ideals she might have been little different than the young idealists you tout. Sure young voters are free to be hard on her but her point and mine is that in the real world idealists hardly go so far as to actually deliver political change and as such it was the pragmatic need to negotiate and compromise in order maintain course for attaining the very ideals in question that has defined her career. This the young will come to learn as we all have. So to this point she is unchanged ideologically is my point and as such is now even more useful to the cause (in terms of being best placed to maintain momentum in direction) than would the wishful thinking that a one sided revolution (either side of aisle) is about to take place and that somehow she is the enemy - rather than the friend of the democrat's cause needed in the white house.

This is the core issue that separates the Sanders camp from the Hillary camp in my view. It is an old debate among the left – between the evolutionists and the revolutionists. The last Democratic debate featured a segment where the two debated over who was a progressive. What does it mean to be a progressive? What does it mean to be a Democrat? I believe that there was an ideological shift that took place during the Reagan years that pulled Democrats more towards the middle and resulted in the moderate/conservative Clinton presidency of the 1990s. Some scholars and activists, like Dr. Cornel West for example, claim that Democrats today are what used to be called Republicans, drawing comparisons between the policies of Barack Obama and Richard Nixon. And if you actually listen to Hillary, many times she sounds a bit like Marco Rubio, or other moderate Republicans, especially on foreign policy.

It seems to me that there is a bit of an uprising on the left where many have grown tired of the establishment Democrats. The party needs to redefine itself in this election and figure out what it wants to represent. Does it want to continue to maintain the status quo down the path of mediocrity? Or does it finally want to fight for the ideals that the left profess through their discourse? You say that Hillary would be a friend of the Democrat’s cause. Many are asking, “what truthfully is that cause and how does it benefit me?” You do have a point about negotiations and compromise being important in a democracy, but at the same time, the Democrats cannot become defeatists who sellout their core beliefs at the first sign of a fight.

My final point is about the general election itself. I actually fell that Hillary will struggle against Rubio, Cruz and Trump. Sanders pointed out in the last debate that when Democrats win elections it is usually during years with high voter turnout. This means that Democrats win when young people and independents actually show up at the polls. Hillary will not be able to motivate these people to turn out, whereas Trump will almost certainly motivate many independents. And a showdown between Hillary and either Rubio or Cruz would be a close race where Hillary could easily lose.

Don’t let the whole Sanders is a “socialist” thing scare you off. This isn’t the 1980s. We’ve had about two generations of people now that have grown up free of Cold War propaganda.
