  • Bank of England Governor Mark Carney victim of Canadian art sale scam

    From thisismoney.co.uk

The Governor of the Bank of England has inadvertently been caught up in an art scandal in his native Canada after buying a painting for thousands of pounds. Mark Carney bought the 5ft by 6ft oil painting by Kim Dorland from a flamboyant art collector for £11,870 last year. The deal, which included a 10 per cent discount, was brokered by Canadian television presenter Evan Solomon who has interviewed Mr Carney several times and referred to him as 'the Guv'. Following the deal, Mr Solomon reportedly told his collector that Mr Carney 'has access to the highest power network in the world' and could be 'a great client'. ... (full story)

Was the Canadian TV presenter unethical in abusing his position ... sure he was!

However, I tend to agree with <<mima>>, this hardly falls under the definition or understanding of a scam. £11.8K for a painting is hardly a life-changing sum and particularly for someone like Mr. Carney. He got the painting at a price he was happy with ... so where is the scam?

This is the going rate for a Kim Dorland. He is in innovative artist with a very solid following.

...so quick to judge the value of something because you want this to be a scandal.

E.S put himself in a compromising position and certainly facilitated his downfall, but Carney just ended up with a desirable painting.
