EU court says Hungary broke competition rules by fixing food prices
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) found that the decree adopted by Budapest in 2022, requiring retailers to sell certain food products at a fixed price, breaches the bloc’s Common Organisation of the Markets (CMO) regulation. “Even assuming that the contested government decree is capable of protecting disadvantaged consumers by means of a guaranteed supply of basic foodstuffs at affordable prices and of combating inflation, that decree goes beyond what is necessary to achieve those objectives,” the ruling reads.
