  • US consumer spending jumped in July as retail sales were up 1%, much better than expected

    Consumer spending held up even better than expected in July as inflation pressures showed more signs of easing, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. Advanced retail sales accelerated 1% on the month, according to numbers that are adjusted for seasonality but not inflation. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for a 0.3% increase. June sales were revised to a decline of 0.2% after initially being reported as flat. Excluding auto-related items, sales increased 0.4%, also better than the 0.1% forecast. Strong . Not much weakness in this report at all.


Motor Vehicle & Parts Dealers increased by 1.4% from June 2024, contributing significantly to overall retail growth. Notable increase of 4.0% y/y.

Nonstore Retailers up 4.5% from June 2024. Sales grew by 6.7% y/y, the highest among the categories, signaling strong e-commerce activity.

Food Services & Drinking Places increased 0.3% m/m and grew 3.4% y/y, indicating steady consumer spending in the dining sector.

Electronics & Appliance Stores saw strong m/m growth of 1.6%, recovering from a -5.2% dip in June 2024.


Sporting Goods, Hobby, Musical Instrument, & Book Stores declined by -0.7% m/m, continuing a volatile trend from a -6.8% drop in June 2024.

Miscellaneous Store Retailers down -0.2% from June 2024.

Clothing & Clothing Accessories Stores down -0.1% from June 2024.

Markets are pricing out a 50 bps Sept rate cut. 25 bps is still the base line or at least consensus for Sept. There's some pricing out that still needs to happen, which should result in more USD strength.

US economic numbers have been about as reliable as North Korea's lately.
Today's data is very good to fade out the spectrum of imminent recession and bring back the inflation concerns until September data.

For those that want to work. Plenty of good paying jobs. Bull run stock market for 15 years. 6 trillion in cash on sidelines earning 4-5% risk free. Massive equity for those that own homes.

I work outside in every type of neighborhood. You see driveways with 2-5 cars, campers, boats, motorcycles, 4 wheelers and every other toy you can imagine. if people didn't have money to spend then you wouldn't see porches piled high with Amazon boxs, etc. Uber eats, door dash etc etc
