    The Producer Price Index for final demand increased 0.1 percent in July, seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Final demand prices rose 0.2 percent in June and were unchanged in May. (See table A.) On an unadjusted basis, the index for final demand advanced 2.2 percent for the 12 months ended in July. The July rise in the index for final demand can be attributed to prices for final demand goods, which moved up 0.6 percent. In contrast, the index for final demand services fell 0.2 percent.     US wholesale inflation slowed as expected in July, easing after an unexpected flare-up the month before. That sets the stage for an even more crucial reading on price hikes due out Wednesday. The Producer Price Index, a measurement of average price changes seen by producers and manufacturers, was 2.2% for the 12 months ended in July, a stark pullback from the 2.7% increase registered in June, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Tuesday. Wholesale inflation measure rose 0.1% in July but still less than market expectation.
Generally soft. Some highlights:

PPI for final demand advanced 2.2% over the 12 months ending in July.

Electric power prices decreased by 1.1%.

Prices for final demand services fell by 0.2% in July, after no change in June. This is the largest decrease since March 2023.

A significant 1.2% drop in trade services prices was a major contributor to the overall decline in final demand services.

Prices for foods rose by 0.6% over the past 12 months, showing moderate inflation in this sector.



Prices for final demand goods increased by 0.6% in July, the largest monthly advance since February. This rise was largely driven by a 1.9% increase in prices for final demand energy. It increased by 3.3% year-over-year, reflecting persistent inflationary pressures in this category.

Prices for final demand energy spiked by 1.9% in July, significantly higher than the 0.6% increase in June. It has surged by 5.8% over the past year, indicating significant upward pressure, particularly driven by gasoline and diesel fuel prices.

Gasoline prices jumped 2.8%, driving a substantial portion of the overall increase in goods.

A higher than expected reading should be taken as positive/bullish for the USD, while a lower than expected reading should be taken as negative/bearish for the USD

A "teach a man to fish moment": while no one can tell you with certainty what will happen given any particular number, you can click the little 'folder' icons on the news tab to view the "expected" result for the currency(ies) affected. This should give an indication of what the market would be expected to do for various news events.

Keep in mind though, reaction is often different than the expectation.... for a large number of reasons.
