Employment was little changed in July (-2,800; -0.0%), while the employment rate fell 0.2 percentage points to 60.9%. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.4%. In July, employment decreased among women (-41,000; -2.6%) and men (-15,000; -0.8%) aged 55 to 64. Employment also fell among young men aged 15 to 24 (-20,000; -1.5%), while it increased among men aged 25 to 54 (+48,000; +0.7%). Employment fell in wholesale and retail trade (-44,000; -1.5%) as well as in finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing (-15,000; -1.0%) in July. Economy lost 2,800 jobs in July, unemployment rate unchanged at 6.4%
Statistics Canada says students are facing a particularly challenging summer job market, while recent immigrants are disproportionately affected by the weakening labour conditions. The federal agency’s July labour force survey says the jobless rate held steady at 6.4 per cent last month as the economy shed a modest 2,800 jobs. As the Bank of Canada held its key interest rate at historically high levels, the unemployment rate has climbed 0.9 percentage points over the last year.
