    The number of job openings was unchanged at 8.2 million on the last business day of June, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the month, both the number of hires and total separations were little changed at 5.3 million and 5.1 million, respectively. Within separations, quits (3.3 million) and layoffs and discharges (1.5 million) changed little. Job market remains steady but when you compare to a year ago the softening becomes more apparent.


Notable changes include increases in job openings in accommodation and food services (+112,000) and state and local government, excluding education (+94,000).

Revisions for May 2024 showed an increase in job openings by 90,000, bringing the total to 8.2 million.


The number of job openings remained relatively steady, basically unchanged from May. However, latest data represents a decrease of 941,000 from June 2023.

Durable goods manufacturing saw a decrease of 88,000 job openings, and the federal government had 62,000 fewer job openings.

The total number of hires in June was little changed at 5.3 million, but a decrease of 554,000 from a year earlier.

The quits rate was 2.1%, with significant decreases in quits in construction (-64,000) and state and local government education (-55,000).
