Central Bank Digital Currency Experiments Progress on the Pilot Program (April 2024)
Based on "The Bank of Japan's Approach to Central Bank Digital Currency,"1 which was released in October 2020, the Bank of Japan has examined whether the basic functions and features of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) are technically feasible through two phases of Proof of Concept (PoC): PoC Phase 1 (from April 2021 to March 2022) and PoC Phase 2 (from April 2022 to March 2023). 2 Since April 2023, the Bank has been proceeding with a pilot program with the aim of conducting technical evaluation not explored in the PoCs, while leveraging the skills and insights of private businesses.
