In February 2024, consumer prices increased by 2.9% year on year Consumer price index - provisional results - February 2024
These provisional results are only preliminary data. Accordingly, they should not be used for contractual revaluations. The indices published here are based on a limited set of price observations and from estimates of some rates of change for fares which are not yet available. The complete results will be published on 15 March 2024.
Over a year, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) should rise by 2.9% in February 2024, after +3.1% in January, according to the provisional estimate made at the end of the month. This decrease in inflation should be due to the slowdown over one year in prices of food, manufactured products and services. Contrariwise, those of energy and tobacco should accelerate.
Over one month, consumer prices should rebound in February 2024 (+0.8% after ‑0.2% in January). This rebound should be due to the increase of prices of services, in particular rents and transports, and of those of energy, especially electricity, manufactured products and tobacco. Contrariwise, prices of food should decrease slightly over one month.
Inflation over one year should decrease in February 2024 despite the sharp increase in prices over one month, notably due to “base effects” (prices had increased sharply over one month in February 2023).
Year on year, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices should rise by 3.1% in February 2024, after +3.4% in January. Over one month, it should rebound (+0.9% after ‑0.2% in the previous month).

Definition: the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) is designed for comparison of consumer price inflation between Members States of the European Union. It is computed for all households in France. The main difference between HICP and CPI is about the health costs: HICP is based on net prices of social security reimbursements and CPI is based on gross prices.
