Between the end of September 2023 and the end of December 2023, private payroll employment was stable (0.0%), after +0.1% in the previous quarter (that is -8,300 jobs after +30,700 jobs). Private payroll employment exceeded its Q4 2022 level by +0.5% (+113,800 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +5.8% (that is +1.2 million jobs). The amount of jobs creations in private payroll employment in 2023 was then three times below the amount in 2022(+346,600 jobs).

In Q4 2023, private payroll employment was stable, after +0.1% in the previous quarter

Between the end of September 2023 and the end of December 2023, private payroll employment was stable (0.0%), after +0.1% in the previous quarter (that is -8,300 jobs after +30,700 jobs). Private payroll employment exceeded its Q4 2022 level by +0.5% (+113,800 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +5.8% (that is +1.2 million jobs). The amount of jobs creations in private payroll employment in 2023 was then three times below the amount in 2022(+346,600 jobs).

Temporary employment decreased for the fourth consecutive quarter

In Q4 2023, temporary employment decreased again: -1.6% (that is -12,000 jobs) after -2.1% (that is -16,300 jobs) in the previous quarter and decreases yet in the first semester. Temporary employment fell thus by 7.0% between the end of 2022 and the end of 2023 (that is -56,700 jobs). It was also below its pre-sanitary crisis level (-2.5% that is -19,700 jobs).

As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (agriculture, industry, construction, services).

Excluding temporary work, private payroll was virtually stable in market services and kept rising in the industry

In Q4 2023, private payroll employment excluding temporary work in agriculture rose by 0.9% (that is +2,600 jobs) after a decrease of 1.0% in the previous quarter. It was below its Q4 2022 level (-1.5%).

Industrial private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) kept rising: +0.3% in Q4 2023 after +0.4% (that is +9,600 jobs after +11,900 jobs in the previous quarter). It topped its Q4 2022 level by 1.1% (or +35,000 jobs). After having reached its pre-sanitary level in Q4 2021, it exceeded it by 2.6% (+82,900 net job creations since the end of 2019).

In construction, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) was virtually stable in Q4 2023: -0.1% after -0.3% (that is -1,600 jobs after -5,500 jobs). It was below its Q4 2022 level (-0.7%, that is -11,700 jobs) but remained well above its pre-sanitary level (+7.2%, that is +106,200 jobs compared to the end of 2019).

In market services, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) was at a standstill: it was virtually stable (-0.1%) in Q4 2023 after +0.3% in the previous quarter (that is -12,000 jobs after +33,800 jobs). Yet, It topped its Q4 2022 level (+1.0% or +128,200 jobs) and exceeded sharply its pre-sanitary level (+7.3% compared to the end of 2019 or +853,200 jobs).

In non-market services,private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) slightly increased in Q4 2023: +0.2% (or +5,000 jobs) after a more marked rise in Q3 2023 (+0.4% that is +9,700 jobs). It was above its Q4 2022 level by 0.9% (or +23,600 jobs) and its end of 2019 level by 4.6% (or +121,800 jobs).
