Over a month, output accelerated in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods

In November 2023, output accelerated in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+2.8% after +0.7%). It bounced back in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+1.8% after ‑2.7%). It was almost stable in the “other manufacturing” industries (+0.1% after -0.4%). On the contrary, it decreased in the manufacture of transport equipment (-0.8% after +2.5%): it fell back sharply in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (‑5.5% after +9.0%) but bounced back in the manufacture of “other transport equipment” (+2.8% after ‑1.8%). It was down in the manufacture of food products and beverages (-0.8% after +0.1%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (‑0.6% after ‑4.2%).

Over a year, manufacturing output was down by 0.3%

Cumulative output over the last three months (September to November 2023) was lower than that of the same three months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (‑0.3%), but was higher in the whole industry (+0.8%).

Over this one-year period, output expanded markedly in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+7.4%),in the manufacture of transport equipment (+6.0%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+3.2%). It increased strongly in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+33.7%), due to the strike that had affected the refineries in October 2022. On the contrary, output declined in the “other manufacturing” industries (‑1.8%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑4.2%).

Output in some energy-intensive industries remained lower compared to the level of 2021

In the context of high electricity and gas prices invoiced to firms given the contracts agreed in 2022 for 2023, energy-intensive industries are particularly exposed to rising –or persistently high– production costs, which may affect their output. Output over the last three months (September to November 2023) remained thus down sharply compared to that of the second quarter of 2021 (last quarter before the sharp rise of energy prices), particularly in the manufacture of basic iron and steel and of ferro-alloys (‑19.8%), the manufacture of pulp, paper and paperboard (‑19.8%), the manufacture of glass and glass products (-11.9%) and the manufacture of basic chemicals (‑10.1%).

The monthly evolution of the October 2023 manufacturing index has been revised upwards

Compared to the previous release, the evolution of the manufacturing index between September and October 2023 has been revised upwards by 0.1 points (after rounding) at +0.2% instead of +0.1%. The evolution of the index for the whole industry is confirmed.
