It exceeded its Q3 2022 level by 0.8% (that is +207,000 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of 2019) by 4.8%, that is more than 1.2 million additional jobs, within which one out of three is an apprenticeship contract.

In Q3 2023, private payroll employment was virtually stable, as in the previous quarter

In Q3 2023, payroll employment was virtually stable again: +0.1% (or +36,700 net job creations) after +0.1% in the previous quarter (that is +26,800 jobs). It exceeded its Q3 2022 level by 0.8% (that is +207,000 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of 2019) by 4.8%, that is more than 1.2 million additional jobs, within which one out of three is an apprenticeship contract.

Private payroll employment was nearly stable is Q3 2023: +0.1% (that is +30,700 jobs), after +0.1% (that is +15,500 jobs) in Q2 2023. It topped its pre-sanitary crisis level by 5.8% (that is nearly 1.2 million jobs). Public payroll employment was also virtually stable: +0.1% that is +6,000 jobs after +0.2% (that is +11,200 jobs) in the previous quarter. It topped its Q3 2022 level by 0.4% (that is +26,200 jobs) and its Q4 2019 level by 1.3% (that is +77,300 jobs).

Temporary employment decreased for the third quarter in a row

In Q3 2023, temporary employment decreased for the third consecutive quarter: -2.1% (or -16,300 jobs) after -0.9% in Q2 2023 (or -6,900 jobs) and -2.6% in Q1 2023 (or -21,400 jobs). Temporary employment was sharply below its Q3 2022 level (-5.0%) and moderately below its pre-sanitary crisis level (-1.0%).

As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (agriculture, industry, construction, market or non market services).

Excluding temporary work, private payroll increased in industry and market services but kept decreasing in construction

In agriculture, payroll employment decreased in Q3 2023 (-1.0% that is -3,000 jobs) but remained above its Q3 2022 level (+2.5% that is +7,600 jobs).

Industrial payroll employment (excluding temporary work) rose in Q3 2023 by 0.4% (that is +11,900 jobs) after a rise of 0.2% in the previous quarter (+5,600 jobs). It exceeded its Q3 2022 level by 1.1% and its pre-sanitary level by 2.4%.

In the construction sector, payroll employment decreased again by 0.3% in Q3 2023 (that is -5,500 jobs after -4,600 jobs). It was below its Q3 2022 level (-0.5%) but exceeded its pre-sanitary crisis level by 7.3%.

Excluding temporary work, private payroll in market services rose by 0.3% (that is +33,700 jobs) in Q3 2023, after +0.2% in Q2 2023 (+23,400 jobs). It topped its Q3 2022 level by 1.4% and its pre-sanitary level by 7.4%. Within this sector, payroll employment increased notably in accommodation and food service activities (+14,400 jobs) and in wholesale and retail trade (+13,200 jobs).

Payroll employment in non-market services increased by 0.2% (+15,800 jobs) in Q3 2023 after +0.1% in the previous quarter. It topped its Q3 2022 level by 0.5% and its pre-sanitary level by 2.3%.

Revisions

Compared to the employment detailed estimate published on 7 September 2023, the quarterly increase in payroll employment (private and public) in Q2 2023 has been revised upwards by 5,800 jobs but its relative evolution remains unchanged.

Compared to the flash estimate published on 3 November 2023, the quarterly increase in payroll employment in the private sector alone in Q3 2023 has been revised upwards by 48,400 jobs, its relative evolution being changed by +0.2 points. This revision is due notably to the integration of late declarations which impacted more than estimated.
