  • Source: INSEE

Food products: rebound

In June 2023, household food consumption increased sharply (+2.5% after +0.3%). This rise is mainly due to the rebound in agrifood products after eight consecutive months of decline. The consumption of agricultural products rose however more moderately than in the previous two months.

Tobacco consumption increased for its part slightly.

For the second quarter of 2023 as a whole, household food consumption decreased by 2.7% compared to that of the first quarter of 2023.

Engineered goods: virtual stability

In June 2023, household consumption of engineered goods was virtually stable (‑0.1% after ‑0.2% in May 2023).

For the second quarter of 2023 as a whole, it was virtually stable (‑0.1%) compared to that of the first quarter of 2023.

Durable goods: slight decline

In June 2023, consumption of durable goods fell again (‑0.6%, as in May 2023). Spending on transport equipment declined again (‑1.4%), especially the purchases of new cars, but they grew over the whole quarter. Spending on housing durables also kept decreasing (‑0.3%, as in May 2023), especially electronic appliances and furniture. Conversely, spending on “other durable goods” rebounded sharply.

Textile-clothing: downturn

In June 2023, spending on clothing and textiles retreated (‑0.4 % after +1.4% in May 2023 –revised data). This decline is mainly explained by a decrease in purchases of textile and clothing while the purchases in leather and shoes increased more moderately.

Other engineered goods: rebound

In June 2023, consumption of other engineered goods rebounded (+0.9% after -0.6% in May 2023). This rebound is mainly linked to the increase of perfume purchases.

Scope and definition – Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2014, they accounted for half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:

-Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1)

-Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2).

-Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).

The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
