Wholesale selling prices, May 2023
-2.6% on the same month a year earlier
-1.1% on the previous month
WIESBADEN – In May 2023 the selling prices in wholesale trade fell by 2.6% compared with May 2022. This was the highest decrease compared with the preceding year since July 2020 (also -2.6% compared with July 2019). The annual rates of change in April 2023 and in March 2023 had been -0.5% and +2.0%, respectively. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) further reports that, compared with the previous month, wholesale prices decreased by 1.1% in May 2023.
The year-on-year decrease was mainly due to the price decrease of mineral oil products by 22.7%. Also scrap and residual materials (-31,3 %), cereals, raw tobacco, seeds and feedstuff (-27.9%), ores, metals and semi-finished metal products (-22.1%) as well as chemical products (-9.4%) had a large impact on the annual rate of change in May 2023.
By contrast the selling prices in wholesale trade for fruit, vegetables and potatoes (+22.5%), living animals (+16.9%) as well as for building materials and elements (+11.6%) were higher than in May 2022.

Wholesale price indices will be transposed to the new base year 2021 with the reporting month of January 2024. First results related to the new base year will be published in March 2024.
