Wholesale selling prices, April 2023
-0.5% on the same month a year earlier

WIESBADEN – In April 2023 the selling prices in wholesale trade fell by 0.5% compared with April 2022. This was the first decrease compared with the preceding year since December 2020 (-1.2% compared with December 2019). The annual rates of change in March 2023 and in February 2023 had been +2.0% and +8.9%, respectively. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) further reports that, compared with the previous month, wholesale prices decreased by 0.4% in April 2023.
The year-on-year decrease was mainly due to the price decrease of mineral oil products by 15.7% compared with April 2022. Also scrap and residual materials (-31,5 %), cereals, raw tobacco, seeds and feedstuff (-25.2%), ores, metals and semi-finished metal products (-20.5%) and chemical products (-5.4%) had a large impact on the annual rate of change in April 2023.
By contrast the selling prices in wholesale trade for fruit, vegetables and potatoes (+22.0%), building materials and elements (+13.9%) and as well as for living animals (+11.4%) were higher than in April 2022.
