In April 2023, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.6% over one month, after +0.9% in March. The prices of energy fell back slightly (‑0.7% after +0.2%), due to a decrease in the prices of gas (‑3.8% after ‑0.4%) and petroleum products (‑0.6% after ‑0.4%). The prices of food slowed down (+0.6% after +1.8%), linked with a decline of those of fresh products (‑2.9% after +3.2%). Prices of manufactured goods decelerated also (+0.3% after +1.5%), as did those of tobacco (+1.5% after +7.6%). On the contrary, the prices of services accelerated (+1.0% after +0.1%), due to the rebound in transport service prices (+8.1% after ‑1.0%) and to the acceleration of those of “other services” (+0.8% after +0.2%).

Seasonally adjusted, consumer prices increased by 0.6% in April 2023, after +0.3% in March.

Year on year, consumer prices grew by 5.9% in April 2023, after +5.7% in March. This increase in inflation resulted from an acceleration in prices of energy (+6.8% after +4.9%), services (+3.2% after +2.9%) and tobacco (+9.4% after +7.8%). Contrariwise, the prices of manufactured goods (+4.6% after +4.8%) and food (+15.0% after +15.9%) slowed down.

Increase in core inflation year on year

Year on year, core inflation grew by 6.3% in April 2023, after +6.2% in March.

The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) rose by 0.7% in April 2023 over a month, after +1.0% in the previous month; year on year, it increased by 6.9%, after +6.7% in March.

Acceleration in energy prices year on year

Year on year, the prices of energy accelerated in April 2023 (+6.8% after +4.9%). The decrease in petroleum product prices was less marked than in the previous month (‑1.3% after ‑7.4%), notably due to a “base effect” (they has fallen sharply in April 2022 with the introduction of the pump discount): diesel prices decreased more slightly (‑3.6% after ‑8.5%) and those of petrol rebounded (+7.9% after ‑3.5%). Prices of electricity accelerated (+11.2% after +11.0%) and those of gas slowed down sharply over a year (+22.9% after +35.6%), due in particular to a “base effect” (they has risen sharply in April 2022) but also to a monthly decline in April 2023.

Acceleration in service prices year on year

Year on year, service prices rose by 3.2% in April 2023, after +2.9% in March. The prices of “other services” accelerated (+3.9% after +3.5%), notably those of services for the maintenance and repair of the dwelling (+6.3% after +6.0%), accommodation services (+6.8% after +1.0%) and catering services (+5.9% after +5.8%). The prices of rents, water and household refuse collection increased at a pace close to that of the previous month (+3.1% after +3.0%). Those of transport services slowed down (+9.6% after +10.9%), notably airfares (+22.6% after +26.8%), transport by railway (+6.7% after +8.5%) and transport by road (+6.5% after +10.7%). Lastly, the decrease in health service prices (‑0.5% after ‑0.1%) and communication service prices (‑1.5% after ‑1.4%) accentuated.

Slowdown in manufactured good prices year on year

Year on year, manufactured good prices increased by 4.6% in April 2023, after +4.8% in March. The prices of clothing and footwear slowed down (+2.7% after +2.9%), as did those of “other manufactured goods” (+6.2% after +6.5%). The prices of furniture and furnishings slowed down also (+8.4% after +9.1%), as did those of small electric household appliances (+7.8% after +9.1%), games, toys and hobbies (+1.0% after +2.4%), garden products, plants and flowers (+4.8% after +6.6%) and vehicles (+5.8% after +6.5%). Contrariwise, the prices of major household appliances accelerated (+5.0% after +4.4%), as did those of other appliances, articles and products for personal care (+9.1% after +8.9%) and of glassware, tableware and household utensils (+9.9% after +9.7%). Finally, the decrease in health product prices accentuated slightly (‑0.5% after ‑0.4%).

Slowdown in food prices year on year

Year on year, food prices rose by 15.0% in April 2023, after +15.9% in March. The prices of fresh products slowed down sharply (+10.6% after +17.1%), notably those of fresh vegetables (+12.1% after +29.3%) and fresh fruits (+9.5% after +10.1%). Contrariwise, those of fresh fish increased at a pace comparable to that of the previous month (+10.1% after +10.0%). Excluding fresh products, food prices also increased year on year at a rate close to that of the previous month (+15.8% after +15.7%). The prices of bread and cereals accelerated (+15.8% after +15.4%), as did those of sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery (+16.3% after +15.5%) and of alcoholic beverages (+8.7% after +8.1%). Conversely, the prices of meat (+14.9% after +15.5%), milk, cheese and eggs (+21.5% after +21.7%) and non-alcoholic beverages (+13.9% after +14.0%) slowed down.
