In the week ending April 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 242,000, an increase of 13,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised down by 1,000 from 230,000 to 229,000. The 4-week moving average was 239,250, an increase of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised down by 250 from 236,000 to 235,750. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent for the week ending April 22, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the previous week's unrevised rate. Jobless claims increase in sign of labor market cooling
The number of new applications for unemployment benefits rose by 13,000 to 242,000 last week, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Rising jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, are a sign the labor market is starting to weaken in reaction to the Federal Reserve’s efforts to tighten monetary policy to slow economywide spending and bring down inflation.
