graphiqueMonthly Industrial Production Indices
Over a month, output decreased in all industries
In October 2022, output dropped again in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (-5.6% after -2.8%) and in the “other manufacturing” industries (-1.6% after -0.2%). It fell back in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (-3.5% after +0.7%). It plummeted in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (-46.3% after -6.5%) due to the strikes in the refineries. It went down again in the manufacture of transport equipment (-1.9% after -3.2%): output decreased again in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (-5.8%, as in September) but recovered in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+1.3% after -1.0%). Output also went down again in the manufacture of food products and beverages, albeit more slightly than in the other major sectors (-0.3% after -0.4%).

Over a year, manufacturing output went up by 2.4%
In the manufacturing industry, output of the last three months (August to October 2022) was higher than that of the same months of the previous year (+2.4%). It was nevertheless stable in the whole industry due to the drop in energy production.
Over this one-year period, output increased sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (+11.4%), particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+26.8%), less impacted than a year ago by supply difficulties for electronic components, though these difficulties persist to some extent. Output also went up in the “other manufacturing” industries (+1.2%), the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+4.0%) and the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+3.9%). On the contrary, output plummeted in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (-12.2%), owing to a drop in electricity production. Finally, it decreased slightly in the manufacture of food products and beverages (-0.4%).
The evolution of the September 2022 manufacturing index is revised downwards
The evolution of the manufacturing index between August 2022 and September 2022 is revised downwards by 0.1 points after rounding, compared to the previous release, at -0.5% instead of -0.4%. The evolution of the index for the whole industry is also revised downwards by 0.1 points, after rounding, at -0.9% instead of -0.8%.
