If Putin wanted this land why didn't he sit down with Zelinsky and work out a price for it, like a couple of farmers fighting over a field. Should have made an offer, $xx,xxx,xxx,xx it would have cost Russia less that way.

It was just an exercise in style but the article you point to is highly dubious and not very convincing. I've seen numerous videos and testimonies depicting a totally different situation, the opposite actually. As to your question, is it even relevant? What makes you think Putin wanted any piece of land? He never said it. He actually said the opposite.
