  • Nobel Prize-winning economist says he doesn’t see anything that resembles a recession in the U.S.

    From cnbc.com

Nobel Prize-winning economist Richard Thaler says the U.S. may have recorded two successive quarters of economic contraction, but it’s “just funny” to describe it as being a recession. “I don’t see anything that resembles a recession. We have record low unemployment, record high vacancies. That looks like a strong economy,” Thaler told CNBC’s Julianna Tatelbaum on Wednesday. “The economy is growing, it’s just growing slightly less fast than prices. And that means real GDP fell a little bit, but I think it’s just funny to call that a recession,” he said. “It’s not like any recession we’ve ... (full story)

Amazing how a Nobel prize winning behavioral economist won't mention or touch energy policy shift which effected gasoline and diesel price in early 2021, in turn creating domestic inflation long before Russian attack.

I'll play devils advocate and say, perhaps the article author choose what to use thereby painting a certain picture.

Record low consumer confidence and record low Services PMI (except the lockdown period in 2020) are not signs of economic downturn?
Maybe he will regret one day his remark: "Nobel Prize-winning economist Richard Thaler says the U.S. may have recorded two successive quarters of economic contraction, but it’s “just funny” to describe it as being a recession."

No recession going on in his bank account. And to be completely candid, I have zero respect for Nobel prizes, as from what I've seen the bar is pretty low. Delusions are America's biggest threat.

Look at work force participation, a much more representative number than unemployment. Post-Covid people left the workforce and did not return or file for unemployment, which is where the unemployment numbers come from. A Nobel Prize-winning economist should know this.
