Employment was little changed in April after two consecutive months of growth. The unemployment rate edged down 0.1 percentage points to 5.2%. Increases in employment in professional, scientific and technical services and public administration were offset by declines in construction and retail trade. There were more people working in the Atlantic region and Alberta, while employment fell in Quebec. At the national level, employment gains among core-aged women aged 25 to 54 were offset by a decrease among core-age men. Canada Unemployment Rate Falls in April to Record Low 5.2%
Canada's unemployment rate fell to another record low in April, another sign that labor-market conditions continue to tighten. Job growth decelerated sharply in the month after sizable gains in February and March. Statistics Canada reported Friday that employment in Canada increased by a net 15,300 in April, or well below market expectations for an advance of 40,000 jobs, according to economists at TD Securities. In February and March, the economy added 409,000 net new jobs. On a per-month average, Canada added 141,000 net new jobs in the past three months, and about 77,000 in the past six months.
