Warning

In this publication, the concept of employment refers to the criteria of the International labour organization (ILO). Employment includes both persons who have worked at least one paid hour during a given period, but also persons who have not worked for certain reasons (in particular those on short-time working / temporary lay-off and sick leave).

This first flash estimate of private paid employment for the first quarter of 2022 was made using data from the DSN (“déclaration sociale nominative”) until March 2022. The estimate may be revised on the occasion of the detailed publication of paid employment (public and private), scheduled for Thursday 9 June 2022.

In Q1 2022, private payroll employment slowed down: +0.3% after +0.6% in the previous quarter

Between the end of December 2021 and the end of March 2022, private payroll employment slowed down: +0.3% after +0.6% (that is 66,100 net job creations after 117,900). This increase follows on the increases in 2021 (+3.5% over a year, that is +677,700 jobs) which had already more than offset the decline in 2020 (-1.8% or -354,000 jobs). In total, at the end of March 2022, private payroll employment exceeds its pre sanitary crisis level (that is the end of 2019) by 2.0% (+389,700 jobs).

Temporary employment declined slightly after seven consecutive quarters of increases

In Q1 2022, temporary employment decreased slightly (-1.4% or -11,500 jobs) after a strong increase in the previous quarter (+5.4% or +42,300 jobs). From mid-2020 to the end of 2021, seven quarters of successive increases (+359,200 net cumulative job creations) had more than compensated for the historic drop in the first quarter of 2020 (-310,000 jobs). In Q1 2022, temporary employment remained above its pre sanitary crisis level: +4.8% (or +37,500 jobs) compared to the end of 2019.

Excluding temporary work, private payroll employment in the first quarter of 2022 increased by 0.4% (+77,600 jobs). As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (industry, construction, market or non market services).

Excluding temporary work, private payroll increased in all sectors

Industrial employment (excluding temporary work) increased slightly again in the first quarter of 2022, in line with the previous quarters: +0.1% (+3,100 jobs) after +0.2% in the previous quarter. This is the fifth consecutive quarterly increase, bringing the number of net jobs created between the end of 2020 and the end of March 2022 to 23,400. These increases do not compensate for the losses in 2020 (-56,200 jobs); industrial employment thus remains below its pre sanitary crisis level (-1.1% or -32,900 jobs compared to the end of 2019).

In non temporary market services, private payroll employment slowed down in the first quarter of 2022: +0.3% after +0.5% (or +38,900 after +57,100 jobs). In this sector, after having fallen in 2020 (-2.6% or -299,100 jobs), private payroll employment rebounded in 2021 (+4.2% or +478,400 jobs). At the end of March 2022, it was well above its pre-crisis level: +1.9% or +218,300 jobs compared to the end of 2019.

In construction, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) increased again by 0.4% (+6,000 jobs after +6,300). It remains above its pre-crisis level (of the end of 2019): +5.1% or +73,600 jobs.

Finally, in the first quarter of 2022, private payroll employment in non market services increased significantly: +1.2% after +0.1% (or +29,700 after +2,400 jobs). It was well above its level at the end of 2019: +3.4% or +84,600 jobs.
