Negotiations in war usually progress much faster when one bargains from a position of strength. Hence Putin will flatten opposition in the eastern area of Ukraine and then bargain/negotiate from a position of strength. Ukraine will then accept terms rather than risk further attrition of personnel and infrastructure etc. Russia has superior numbers of personnel and weaponry sufficient to grind Ukraine resistance down.

It was never a block of choice...to the contrary...countries were forced into it after WWII by the Soviets...who took many great countries and turned them into shitholes with their shitty regime. Nobody is surprised at this latest Putin ploy. It was ALWAYS a ploy, to regroup and resupply.

He HAS to show some sort of military success BEFORE May 9. Or he'll be weakened internally.

The peace talks were just a pretense to allow his armies to regroup, resupply and replace casualties and equipment they have already lost. Hes appointed a new CiC out of Syria, so we can expect all the dirty tricks and atrocities that Russia have used in that theater. The key issue is whether the arms that the west have promised the Ukrainians have been rushed to the front fast enough to blunt the Russian about to be launched.

Its interesting that hes having to look to the draft of new and replacement troops.
It underlines that even this campaign to invade a relatively weak country like Ukraine has put his military resources under pressure.

Salutary for him when he looks at combined NATO resources.
