  • Russia stokes fears of first foreign currency default in more than a century as it attempts payment

    From cnbc.com

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said Wednesday it is up to the U.S. to decide whether crucial interest payments on two dollar-denominated eurobonds go through, stoking fears of Moscow’s first foreign currency debt default in over a century. “The possibility or impossibility of fulfilling our obligations in foreign currency does not depend on us, we have the money, we paid the payment, now the ball is on the side, first of all, of the American authorities,” Siluanov said in an interview with RT Arabic, according to Russian news agency RIA. “The Russian Federation has the necessary money in foreign ... Sorry but I have to say that the Russians are correct on THIS issue. There should have been no way that the FED should be able to "hold" the Russian reserve currency - that is not the mandate of the FED.

Russia is correct - they have the funds to pay but if the FED won't release them what is Russia supposed to do...stop the war? Yeah right, like THAT will happen...

People just need to be careful as we are dealing with unstable leaders with nuclear weapons; that's all I'm saying
...because you never know - until you do!

Sorry with respect thats NOT what you're saying..

You are saying that de jure the "Fed" freezing of CBR dollar assets is beyond the Feds Mandate.
The freezing has been done by the US Treasury as an arm of the US Government.
(Incidentally you dont mention that the entire G7 Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, AND the United States have taken this step.)
And secondly you have made a moral judgement on that step (Russia is correct) and a tactical one as to whether that will stop Putins aggression.. (stop the war). Alone? Of course it wont. But it must be judged as a ELEMENT in making Putins continued pursuit of his war untenable, increase the economic pressure on Russia to return to finding a diplomatic resolution.

Now.. if you really want to say
"..be careful.. dealing with unstable leaders with nuclear weapons"
Why not just say it. I think thats something we can ALL agree on..
