  • US retail sales unexpectedly rise 0.7% in August vs. expected decline of 0.8%

    From cnbc.com

Retail sales post a surprise gain in August despite fears that escalating Covid cases and supply chain issues would hold back consumers, the Census Bureau reported Thursday. Sales increased 0.7% for the month against the Dow Jones estimate of a decline of 0.8%. A separate economic report showed that weekly jobless claims increased to 332,000 for the week ended Sept. 11, according to the Labor Department. The Dow Jones estimate was for 320,000. Yeah, I thought sales, etc would be a miss. Apparently people moved online.
So, I wonder what the fed will say. Surely, this is hawkish for taper now? All strong data this week, pointing towards "recovery."

I’ll admit I didn’t expect. But now, with hindsight.

Those employed are seeing wages rise. On average. My own is up $100/wk since this year based on COLA So while I should be flat based on inflation. My rent is still the same. Car payment. Etc. so my nominal buying power for sure is up and I am spending like it is. I’m the guy who fills a shopping cart online and then NOT checkout. Fill it up a month later and do the same. Now, I’m buying that book I wanted. Brand new not on ebay used either. I’m buying more pizzas etc. it didn’t take much for me to want to spend another $50 a week without regret.

We will see the unemployment benefit slump the sales I’m sure in next month or 2. But should stabilize. I don’t see wages going back down. There’s a complete attitude shift in the workforce. Yea there’s some baby’s who don’t want to work. But there’s people who work their butts off for $5k over the poverty line who are fed up.

Core retail sales defined as " Change in the total value of sales at the retail level, excluding automobiles"
Therefore if cost of goods purchased has risen it will get reflected in Total Value as a positive.
Peoples shopping cart weighs less at checkout but the ka-ching part is larger.

Just go and try and do a small project. The Mind says this will only cost $150.00 but the checkout cost when all is said and done is up 40% from last year.

Getting all excited about a nominal number hardly reflects reality. Much supply shock re-balancing is yet to hit consumer wallets.
Watching consumer debt levels is more important as that will reflect ability of consumer to continue spending.
