  • Bailey: Meeting varied people

    From bankofengland.co.uk

People often talk about diversity in terms of the makeup of their own workforces – and for a public institution like the Bank, it is vital we reflect the whole society we serve. This includes both identity and cognitive diversity, which are equally important. I often say I don’t want to work in a place that is full of people like me. I want the Bank to have an inclusive and open culture where people speak up, ensuring we make better decisions by mitigating the risks of groupthink and myopia. Over recent years, a number of my colleagues at the Bank have also emphasised the importance of diversity and inclusion, ... (full story)

I think central banks should diversify to include employing some people with an IQ above room temperature. They currently feel a little bit ignored in your recruitment policy.

There are some bright spots in the establishment i don't doubt. But its the cut and paste policy which they ALL garner seems to be the norm.

The debacle with the beautiful game shows to me a similarity. Decisions made in the ivory tower with no,zero, nada, niet, concept of the effect down below.
The elites think we are stupid. They are in the main quite correct.

Well, yes, an interesting issue. Clearly I was taking the opportunity to make an attempt at mirth. But with reason.

From what I have read about many people in these powerful and intimidating and unelected positions, and from what they are always saying, is that they are very unimaginative and non-sceptical despite (or maybe because of) excelling in their field of study.

Something to do with not being able to see the forest for the trees.

Off topic, but I have personally known some female scientists of the PhD variety. They SCREAM whenever they hear someone say "the science is settled". That is the antithesis of science itself.

And, likewise, quiet and modest economists cringe in their corners whenever they hear any populist bureaucrat from a central bank or Treasury, however educated in economics they may be, speak publicly and assert some truth such as "we have tools". Is someone dumb but powerful telling them to say such nonsense drivel?
