  • The Employment Situation -- January 2021

    From bls.gov

The unemployment rate fell by 0.4 percentage point to 6.3 percent in January, while nonfarm payroll employment changed little (+49,000), the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The labor market continued to reflect the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and efforts to contain it. In January, notable job gains in professional and business services and in both public and private education were offset by losses in leisure and hospitality, in retail trade, in health care, and in transportation and warehousing. In January, the unemployment rate fell by 0.4 percentage point to 6.3 percent, and the ... (full story)

  • U.S. added 49,000 jobs in January vs. 50,000 expected

    From cnbc.com

Job growth returned to the U.S. in January, with nonfarm payrolls increasing by 49,000 while the unemployment rate fell to 6.3%, the Labor Department said Friday in the first employment report of the Biden administration. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for growth of 50,000 and the unemployment to hold unchanged at 6.7%. Though the employment picture remains challenging, 2021 marked a return to gains after a one-month lull in December that saw the first negative number since the recovery began in May. Millions remain unemployed after companies slashed jobs in March and April 2020 to combat the ... (full story)

Lol you think this is bad news because of what you see in the markets is a sell off on the USD. The USD has been strenghtening all week and the positive reaction to the data was already priced in so even if the data showed all green there would most likely been a sell off. Anyways I dont think dollar strength is over yet unless price on the USDCHF closes below daily pivot and it looks like the 4 hour candle didnt have a dominating close below daily pivot so im thinking usd will still climb and EU will continue its downtrend

20 million of that 80 million was fraudulent votes but liberals judges in authority down play it as misinformation and didn’t even look at the evidence.

There was sarcasm intended in my post, but the underlying issues do remain.
Political selling points which is all Biden administration has mustered so far does not inspire confidence in those decision makers who do create the economy.
All markets have is CB intervention to ride and that by itself is not enough.

Wowsers. As predicted the guy hasn't been in office for a month and its his fault? I maybe understand your sentiment but this is a global pandemic and last month there was a bit of chaos going on in certain parts of the US. If you think that sleepy joe is responsible for businesses not giddying up and hiring you have to think a bit more about history....aka 2008. Its going to take time no matter who is in office in any country on the planet. The ones that are not suffering covid are closed and suffering economically as well.

My two cents logging out again.

Problems are real, tackling them is absent.

Biden's plan is very good. Suits the situation in America exactly. Basic Keynesian activism on which Yellen is well grounded (at one point thought outdated but like now, clearly useful and especially stimulative of jobs growth). But people have to be patient with the new administration as it will take at least 18 months to start gaining track (i.e. 18 months after monies are allocated to the various strands of his overall plan). When I say Biden's plan I mean the whole thing including the sequencing of the various strands, i.e. covid, infrastructure, the green evolution, etc. Folks just need to be patient given the economy suffered multiple shocks at all at once - complicating any rescue.

All the trumpanzees are on Joe because the economy isn't magically fixed after a couple weeks in office. Its almost like he inherited a shit show from the most incompetent bozo to ever sit on the throne.

Killing over 10,000 jobs by stopping the keystone pipeline deal is only the beginning. That’s how one man kills in economy that his predecessor had running on all cylinders.

I agree with you, however the current political party in power doesn’t see it that way. Rather than tackling real problems in the economy they would much rather spend more time, money, and effort impeaching a person who is not in political office just because they dislike him personally.
I don’t understand why they want to ban him from holding the future office. Isn’t this a democracy? Shouldn’t the people be allowed to choose who they want as their leaders in a fair election? The only problem is it no one can verify that the election was fair and there is no one who wants to endure the wrath of the cancel culture. If there really wasn’t any fraud then investigate and follow thru - unless you have something to hide.

Sadly Congress was in the throes of an impeachment trial one year ago instead of dealing with COVID-19. Now 12 months later, with a new president in charge of the country, the same politicians are more worried about a second impeachment trial then they are about a lockdown and only 40,000 jobs being created.

Wow good job Joe Biden, the unemployment rate back to Obama levels (after Trump got it to double digit numbers with his idiotic policies).

Stock market to new highs today again, can you believe it, this guy is just a few weeks in office, the markets like this champ. No wonder Biden is at 61 percent in latest polls, true Americans totally support this guy which is unsurprising considering the hell they went through the last 4 years.

Trumpie was too busy stocking the courts....which in the end still couldn't help him....People need to understand that just relying on the justice system alone can't cover all your wrongdoings.....The consequences of Your wrongdoings may be temporarily halted but man is not the judge of all. So people have misunderstood how life really works on the planet! The Creator of all holds the cards, not federal judges!

Killing the pipeline did not cost that many jobs and they are project jobs anyway, once if the pipeline was built they would be out of work as it isn't sustainable. If you think trumps economy was on all cylinders your metrics are totally whacked out. Didn't you have a relative who complained that they were removing the horse watering troughs in front of the General store to make way for the new automobiles? History proves that under Democratic rule the US economy outperforms times when it is under Republican rule and it's because the Reps only think as far ahead as their terms where the Dems are concerned with how they leave things for their grandchildren.

And so if Trump was reelected how exactly would it be different. I know its not much of an argument as people expect action and change but it takes time I think for a ship this big to make a turn. I did expect the critique of Joe out of the gate though. Happens every time a Dem gets elected. It becomes instantaneously their fault. Seen this on message boards since this whole thing began over 20 years ago.
