  • EU will seek an extension to the deadline for UK free trade agreement ratification

The EU will seek an extension to the deadline by which the free trade agreement with the UK must be ratified, @rtenews has learned.

Two sources have said member states want to extend the deadline from the end of Feb to some time in April.

  • 4/ The treaty is currently being provisionally applied and will only be formally ratified once the European Parliament gives its consent.

  • 6/ Because the EU UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TC) was struck long past several informal deadlines, both sides agreed that the treaty would apply provisionally on Jan 1, with a target date of the end of Feb for the treaty to be formally ratified by the European Parliament.

  • 7/ However, the EU now wants that deadline to be pushed back until April.

  • 10/ According to two sources, member states are keen to get a greater understanding of the governance aspect of the treaty, especially the circumstances in which retaliatory action can be taken if there is a breach of the level playing field provisions.

Interesting how UK is willing to take 2M immigrants from HK but one main reason for brexit was too many immigrants from the EU area.

Ironic isn't it. This is UK and welcome to UK!

Wonder how many of these hk immigrants are far-right orange supporters, I believe there is a huge % in them. UK is simply asking for more trouble in many years to come.

What does it matter who they support? They are seeking freedom from authoritarian oppression.

Freedom you say? Try that with scott morrison for a start. He's been on holiday again and just returned to gently "condemn" the riot on 6th Jan.....YES - another holiday?? I wish I have so many holidays myself. No offence to you in anyway.

We have more than enough far-right supporters in UK, I personally see no need for my next generation, ie my children, to live with fear!!! Yes everyone must live in freedom but when these hk hooligans ("peaceful protesters") acted in the same way the riot of 6th Jan, what makes them.

I rather keep this lot at bay. They can seek freedom elsewhere......

"The UK will introduce a new visa at the end of January that will give 5.4 million Hong Kong residents - a staggering 70% of the territory's population - the right to come and live in the UK, and eventually become citizens." Brexit is starting to look like a great thing looking from EU.

Lets make UK great again......sarcastically. The last I read was around 2million protesters during their so-called yellow umbrella revolution, with umbrellas physically "Made in China", I wonder how many of the 5.4million will encompass this lot of "peaceful protesters". I certainly would love to stay clear of their path.

They didnt get nothing in 1997 for immigration status but now they get everything from boris???? Surely there must be a LIVE unicorn somewhere.

Bleak future ahead in UK as far as I can say.......but the UK government will be counting their £££ when this lot come over to buy properties

And how many do you think will actually be sent by the CCP? This thing will hugely increase the Chinese influence in UK.

Don't even need fake passports, those people can still have close connections to China and have relatives in HK and China. Impossible to tell who actually works for CCP. You have to remember that HK has been part of China over 20 years now.
