  • Brexit: 'Strong possibility' of no trade deal with EU - PM

    From bbc.com

Boris Johnson says there is a "strong possibility" the UK will fail to strike a post-Brexit trade agreement with the EU. The prime minister said "now is the time" for businesses and the public to prepare for that outcome, although negotiators would continue talks. He added that negotiations were "not yet there at all". It comes after his meeting on Wednesday with the president of the EU Commission failed to reach a breakthrough. Weeks of intensive talks between officials have failed to overcome obstacles in key areas including competition rules and fishing rights. In his first public comments since Wednesday ... It's almost a probability now that a no deal is guaranteed . Both sides are preparing for the consequences and maybe after reflection they might reconsider their own stance . I think from a UK point of view , ie a few months of logistical changes , we ( the UK ) , won't come back to the negotiating table . It might take us a year to adjust but I genuinely think we'll flourish outside the EU framework . We'll be a nimble , large scale economy and can adjust our metrics/standards accordingly . Here's what the EU are now doing . Brussels wants continued...

I think the UK giving up fisheries in order to have a free trade deal with the EU would have been a good deal for the UK. A no-deal Brexit is bad for both sides period. But I can't help but think that it might be a little worst for the UK. Only time will tell.

Yes, agreed. I remember a fair bit of inflammatory language going on in this news area when "EU bullying" was mentioned. Well this is what I would consider "bullying". Bigger, stronger and richer than the UK, EU simply trying to push the UK around.

Van, to a point it's a bit like an old friendship. When there is a break up (of sorts) there can be bitterness and even nastiness. The way you described it fits with my feelings about how this is going to turn out. Being the first out of the bloc the UK were always going to have it hard to deter any like-minded country from doing the same. I have gone from wanting an amicable settlement to wanting OUT now at any cost. There really is no way back for the UK without looking like complete fools, UK has to go all the way. So much for the EU being committed to liberalising world trade beyond it's borders lol !

The campaign of mis-information which has marked the entire brexit process is now being unleashed by pro-brexit UK media and the inevitable deterioration and thrashing of EU/UK relations will result which will blight EU/UK relation for a decade. AKA the blame game.
Putin couldnt have written a better script to degrade the Wests cohesion if he tried.
That spreading of misinformation has already started.
I read this morning an allegation posted by a respected member, that the EU will prevent airlines flying to the EU. And a similar allegation that the EU with cooperation from the French/Belgian/Dutch Governments will blockade UK ports.
Both make for inflating the "Bully" narrative but both are UK media propagated lies.
In the case of No-deal Brexit aviation.. the EU released contingency Regulations yesterday 10th December, to ensure basic air connectivity between the UK and the EU and allowing recognition of UK licences and registrations in the event that no free trade agreement is reached. Absent an agreement covering air traffic rights, flights between the UK and EU would have been otherwise grounded since certificates, licences, and registrations would no longer be recognized in their respective counterpart jurisdiction.
In the matter of port Blockades.. the poster is referring to a threat of illegal protest action by French Fishermen to impede operations in French ports which is not EU policy and would damage EU interests.

Of all the misrepresentation plastered on the UK public in the last 4 years the most dangerous has been the delusion that brexit negotiations would be a simple business because UK held all the cards.
The unhappy reality is and always has been that UK has been dealing from a empty deck throughout.

[quote=RossEdwards;13308096]The campaign of mis-information which has marked the entire brexit process i

FYI there was no mis-information regarding Brexit. The process began with Edward Heath - lying to the British public to join what was the Common Market. Successive governments ceded both fiscal and political power via a number of treaties (which were voted down in at least three countries but the electorate were made to vote again because it was the wrong outcome). We have the European Courts dictating policy with the authority to overrule our own High Courts - one of the most respected and long-standing judicial bodies in the world. Several QC's have told me in person that quite a number of the European "judges" are simply not fit for practice.
Then we come to the Common Agricultural Policy - one of the greatest abuses of money and power ever. In the 80's nearly 75% of the EU budget was spent on the CAP primarily for the benefit of French and German farmers (due to a high concentration of small holdings). The CAP decimated British farming - which I know personally as we had a substantial fruit farm in Kent - but no more. I am still in contact with some farmers and preferential practice - especially by the French, is still taking place to this day.
I could go on but I think you get my drift.
The reason that the UK/EU is at this impasse now is due to the the many lily-livered individuals that could not accept the referendum result and tried to nullify it at every turn. Had all the UK population united behind the country and got on with the process from the outset - rather than obstruct it, then we would be in a far better position today.
I concur that free trade and movement across Europe with a common legal framework for cross-border trade is a good concept but not some socialist, omnipotent (and largely unelected) body that wants to control all member states and strip away their self governance.

Of course not...

Boris Johnson, 26/6/16 “British people will still be able to go and work in the EU; to live; to travel; to study; and buy homes and settle down. There will continue to be free trade and access to the single market”..

John Redwood, 17/7/16.“Getting out of the EU can be quick and easy - the UK holds most of the cards”.

Micheal Gove 3/3/19
..we didn’t vote to leave without a deal. That wasn’t the message of the campaign I helped lead. During that campaign, we said we should do a deal with the EU and be part of the network of free trade deals that covers all Europe, from Iceland to Turkey. Leaving without a deal .... would not honour that commitment.

Ross, you seem to be convinced that the British public made their decision to leave after Cameron announced the referendum - they did not. As I alluded to, there are many salient reasons why the Leave vote won and it was not a result of platitudes or diatribe or even slogans but many, many years of excessive and wasteful spending, power grabbing and erosion of sovereignty. The decision was apparent at least a decade ago.
