2019- n° 60In January 2019, manufacturing output accelerated (+1.0%) Industrial production index - January 2019
In January 2019, output increased in the manufacturing industry (+1.0% after +0.4% in December) as well as in the whole industry (+1.3% after a stability).
Since the implementation of the new basis 2015 in March 2018, the industrial production indices (IPI) are reviewed at the rate of one fifth of the series each year. This annual update will make it possible to improve the relevance of the IPI with regards to the evolution of technologies and production processes, by adapting the way of measuring a product, by including emerging products or, on the contrary, removing old products. The first annual review is implemented with this publication in march 2019. It has significantly improved the coverage of the industrial production index and has lead to introduce three new indices : Industrial manufacture of bread and fresh pastry, Manufacture of other articles of paper and paperboard and Pre-press and pre-media services. The adjusted series have been backward-reviewed from 2015. This can generate revisions on indices, even if they are rather moderate at an aggregated level. In parallel with this modification, SA-WDA models have been reestimated on a sub-period (since 2005) to adjust indices on the recent past, in order to provide improved fit and better robustness (SA-WDA models were until now estimated on the whole period, i.e. 1990 to 2019).
- Manufacturing output went down over the last three months (−0.3%)
- Over a year, manufacturing output diminished (−1.1%)
- In January, output bounced back in machinery and equipment goods (+5.9% after −2.2%)
- Output bounced back in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply (+3.1% after −2.2%)
- Output accelerated in “other manufacturing” (+1.0% after +0.2%)
- Output increased again in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.5% after +1.3%)
- Output kept increasing in petroleum and refined products (+4.4% after +4.1%)
