The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In June 2018, output bounced back in the manufacturing industry (+0.6% after −0.5% in May) as well as in the whole industry (+0.6% after −0.2%).

Manufacturing output was virtually stable over the second quarter of 2018 (+0.1%)

Manufacturing output was virtually stable over the second quarter of 2018 (+0.1%). It decreased in the overall industry (−0.4%).

Compared with the first quarter of 2018, output decreased markedly in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (−3.2%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−2.3%). It tumbled in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−10.8%) due to maintenance operations. On the contrary, it rose sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (+2.4%), and more slightly in “other manufacturing” (+0.3%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.5%).

Over a year, manufacturing output increased (+1.4%)

Manufacturing output of the second quarter increased compared to the same quarter of 2017 (+1.4%), as well as in the whole industry (+1.0%).

Over a year, output soared in the manufacture of transport equipment (+5.4%). To a lesser extent, it also grew in “other manufacturing” (+1.3%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+0.7%). Conversely, output tumbled in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−16.7%). It went down in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (−0.9%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.3%).

Strong rebound in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+25.2% after −14.4%)

Output rebounded sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+25.2% after −14.4%), as several refineries resumed production after maintenance.

Output grew in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply (+0.7% after +1.7%)

Output went up mainly in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply (+0.9% after +2.0%).

Output slipped back in machinery and equipment goods (−1.2% after +1.2%)

Output fell back in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (−3.2% after +2.3%) and in that of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (−0.4% after +0.8%). It grew in the manufacture of electrical equipment (+0.8% after +0.1%).

Output decreased again in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.5% after −0.6%)

Output went down again in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.5% after −0.6%), in particular in the processing and preserving of meat and production of meat products.
