there is no thing as position trading now a days. my "mentor" says if you are not soundly informed in advance what real pros doing, the wolves of the market will "eat you alive mercilessly"

If you live among wolves you have to act like wolf.

That is not news, when he came in as a technocrat the deal was that he would resign as soon as the budget was passed.

So he is doing what he promised, guess he is not a politician after all.
You're right (general election was to be held in spring - march or april; it will be held a bit earlier, probably on Feb 24). I'm not sure Monti's not going to be a politician, anyway: he's about to run as prime minster.

By the way, I don't think Italian politics will go worse: Berlusconi has got no chance to win (according to the latest polls his party will collect something like 17-18%) and has a little chance to run as well. Some of his party's leaders left him, and his best ally, Northern League's founder Umberto Bossi, said he wouldn't support him as PM. I think centre-left Bersani or Monti himself will be the next PM (so don't worry about Italy).

Can someone bring some light on my following question:

Why does the postponed fiscal cliff result in a stronger USD vs. EUR? My thought would be that it would result in stronger EUR.

I'm short EUR/USD at about 3180 and think there will probably a late decision on the fiscal cliff still this year...

If you think it will be resolved before years end short is not the side you want to be on. E$ rallies on positive news out of the US. USD is a safe haven currency so when there negative news in US markets its a flight to safety when the news is positive people money flows out of safe havens to take advantage of better rates of return. US interest rates are near zero money will only stay in a safe havens during times of crisis.
