Wholesale selling prices, March 2024
-3.0% on the same month a year earlier
+0.2% on the previous month
WIESBADEN – In March 2024, the selling prices in wholesale trade were 3.0% lower than in March 2023. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the change on the previous year was also -3.0% in February 2024, and -2.7% in January 2024. Compared with February 2024, wholesale prices rose by 0.2% in March 2024.
Decline in prices of mineral oil products
The drop in prices in the wholesale of mineral oil products compared with March 2023 (-3.3%) also had the biggest impact on the overall development of wholesale prices in March 2024. However, the prices of mineral oil products rose by 0.7% when compared with February 2024. Lower year-on-year wholesale prices were also recorded in particular for grain, unmanufactured tobacco, seeds and animal feeds (-19.8%), metals and metal ores (-13.6%), chemical products (-13.1%), and waste and scrap (-6.4%).
By contrast, the wholesale prices of tobacco products (+5.8%) were higher than in March 2023. In March 2024, fruit, vegetables and potatoes (+4.4%) and beverages (+4.2%) also cost more at wholesale level than a year earlier.
Methodological notes:
The present results for March 2024 are the last to be published on base 2015. The indices of wholesale selling prices will be rebased to 2021 as of reference month April 2024. First results for the new base year will be released on 28 May 2024.
