Engineered goods: further increase

In December 2023, household consumption of engineered goods increased again (+0.6%, after +0.9% in November 2023 – revised data) due to the rise in durable goods purchases.

For the fourth quarter of 2023 as a whole, consumption of engineered goods rose by 0.6%.

Durable goods: further increase

In December 2023, consumption of durable goods kept growing at a steady pace (+1.4% after +1.2% in November). This increase is mainly explained by a sharp rise in purchases of both new and used cars.

Spending on household equipment fell back sharply (-3.0% after +1.1%), specifically for telephones, furniture and household appliances. Purchases of glasses and jewellery were also down.

Textile-clothing: downturn

In December 2023, spending on clothing and textiles retreated (-0.7% after +1.7% in November) due to lower spending both on clothing and textiles and a downturn in shoes and leather purchases.

Other engineered goods: slight increase

In December 2023, household consumption of “other engineered goods” increased slightly again (+0.2% after +0.2%). In particular, purchases of pharmaceutical products were up.

  • Source: INSEE

Food products: downturn

In December 2023, household food consumption was back on the decline (-0.7% after a stabillity in November 2023). This decline was due to a general drop in purchases across all food consumption items, with the exception of tobacco purchases, which rose sharply.

For the fourth quarter of 2023 as a whole, food consumption declined by 1.1% after a slight increase over the third quarter (+0.2%).

Over 2023 as a whole, food consumption contracted (-4.7%) more than in 2022 (-3.6%).

*Volumes are measured at chain-link previous year prices (2014 euro billions) and all figures are seasonally and working-day adjusted (SA-WDA).

Scope and definition–Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2014, they accounted for half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:

- Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1);

- Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2);

- Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).

The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
